New red bike paths open in Bedok

Cycling around Bedok just became easier and safer with the opening of the first 5km of a planned 13km of bike paths yesterday.

The paths run along stretches of New Upper Changi Road, Bedok North Avenue 3, Bedok North Street 2, Chai Chee Road and Sims Avenue East. The rest of the paths (8km) will open next month (January 2018), the Land Transport Authority (LTA) told The Straits Times.

"When the entire network is completed, it will feature additional bicycle crossings, bicycle parking boxes and wheeling ramps to make it safer and more conducive for cycling," its spokesman said.

The new paths are red and modelled on those first used in Ang Mo Kio, the test bed for new cycling infrastructure. The LTA said the red lanes are popular with residents as they are easily distinguishable from regular footpaths, adding: "(They) also help alert pedestrians to the presence of cyclists and personal mobility device users."

Construction of the cycling network started in the middle of 2015. [2]

Bedok is set to become the ninth cycling town next year, joining the likes of Jurong Lake District, Punggol and Pasir Ris.

The Government's plan is to construct cycling paths in all 26 Housing Board towns by 2030, contributing to an islandwide network of 700km.

The network, which includes park connectors, is now more than 400km.

Bedok resident Colin Wong, 34, a warehouse assistant, said the new paths will help separate pedestrians from cyclists, and improve safety for more vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.

“The cycling lanes are wide and spacious. Elderly cyclists who ride to the market or ferry their grandchildren to school will be safer on the path,” said Mr Wong, the founder of Relac Riders, a cycling club of about 30 riders who meet up about once a week.

SINGAPORE - Belgian logistics group Katoen Natie has started operating its first driverless truck at ExxonMobil's manufacturing site on Jurong Island.

The truck transports polymer products between the company's packaging and intermediate storage facilities. It operates round the clock, seven days a week, to move some 250,000 tonnes of goods a year.

At a demonstration Tuesday (Oct24), Katoen Natie said the autonomous truck project will be expanded gradually after a six-month trial to 12 trucks, moving some 3 million tonnes of product annually.

The company would not say how much the driverless truck cost, only to say that 70 per cent of funding came from government subsidies. It added that the unmanned vehicle would pay for itself within a year.

The truck is guided by 3,800 transponders (transmitter-responder) buried in the tarmac (material used for surfacing roads) along a fixed route at a top speed of 25kmh - the limit in the petrochemical complex. The company said its next step would be to use GPRS-guided trucks, as well as to introduce unmanned trucks on public roads.

Katoen Natie Singapore chief executive Koen Cardon said he sees a shortage of labour as a real challenge for the logistics group in the years ahead.

"We need to get smarter, and we need to get more productive," he said. "This is exactly what we're doing with this project."

In consultation with Singapore Management University, which recommended Dutch autonomous vehicle specialist VDL as a partner, Katoen Natie fitted a 50ft flatbed truck with sensors and guidance systems early this year (2017). Between May and September, the truck underwent trials on-site.

Mr Cardon said: "This project is a perfect example of the innovation we bring to the forefront to create value for our customers as well as creating the opportunities to upgrade the skills of our workforce."

Elsewhere, Singapore is pushing ahead to roll out driverless vehicles from 2020.

In January, Scania and Toyota Tsusho signed an agreement with PSA and the Ministry of Transport to design, develop and test a truck-platooning system - where a human-driven truck leads a convoy of driverless trucks via wireless communications, for use on the roads.

Last December, Nanyang Technological University announced plans to launch a driverless shuttle that ferries up to 15 passengers on a 1.5km route between CleanTech Park and the university campus.
