In the world of bodyhair removal, you’re either a shaver, a waxer, or a plucker.

Thanks to technology, those with cash to spare often rely on laser treatments, which began gaining traction in the beauty market some 10 years ago.

I (a cash-careful shaver) have never been sold on the idea of laser hair removal – until now.

Tempted after reading about the next wave of laser hair-removal machines, I tried an underarm hair-removal treatment at a renowned dermatologist’s clinic – one of two in Singapore that use new machines from Luminess, the world’s largest medical-laser company.

The treatment, on the new LightSheer Duet, is a working executive’s dream.

It delivered on its promise of being painless – and quick.

Unlike most other laser treatments, no numbing gel was required in this one.

The machine uses a vacuum to gently pull and stretch the skin before applying the laser energy.

This action pulls the hair follicle to the surface, allowing for better and smoother extraction.

Thanks to this technique, the time for the treatment is reduced – by up to 75 per cent – compared to other laser treatments.

Hair removal from large areas such as the full legs or back takes around 20 minutes. My treatment took five.

LightSheer Duet treatments are also available for hair removal from the face, and bikini and back areas.

Prices start from $680 per session for the underarms. Packages start at about $2,700 for six treatments.

Despite the hefty price tag, this is something you can pencil in easily during a lunch hour (and you’ll still have time for a proper lunch).

Drink plenty of water. If the kin and hair are getting enough moisture there is much less chance of getting complication and you feel a lot less uncomfortable when you removed the hair. It is said that 6-8 glasses of water a day is absolutely perfect amount. Also, use a good moisturizing lotion to the skin itself.

There is no downtime, though you are advised not to go into the sun for a day after the treatment. And depending on your skin sensitivity, you may experience some minor discomfort, I was warned.

There was none for me, despite the fact that I consider my skin to be on the sensitive side.

Although I was told that one usually doesn’t see results until a second session is completed, the regrowth, for me (and this varies from person to person), was thinner and slower than before, after just one session.

1. Prep toes with your favorite cleanser to remove any lotion or oils from the toes and wipe them dry.

2. If toe hair is particularly long, trim with brow scissors, being sure not to trim too short. You want the wax to adhere to the hair not the skin.

3. Apply wax to one toe at a time in the direction of the hair growth. Then apply the wax strip to the wax.

4. At this point, use the “pat and pull” method. Just press for a few seconds and then pull. Continue to do this until the hair is completely removed. Grohowski prefers the “pat and pull” method because rubbing can cause the wax to become imbedded in the cracks of the toe, making it difficult to remove even when you pull the toe taut.

5. After removing hair from all the toes, apply a soothing cream.

The bikini line industry has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last few years. There's an increasing number of bizarre and cringe-inducing products out there designed to make your area more "fun" and attention-grabbing.
