NEW YORK
EATING a bit of flaxseed daily could help to lower high blood pressure, a new study suggests.

Researchers said it is still too early to swop blood-pressure medication for the fibre-filled seeds. But if future studies confirm the new results, flax could offer a cheap way to treat high blood pressure, they added.

Flaxseed is well-known as a plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, fibre and lignans, a type of antioxidant. But so far, its effect on high blood pressure - or hypertension - has been better studied in animals than humans.

"This is the first demonstration of the cardiovascular effects of dietary flaxseed in a hypertensive population," Dr Grant Pierce told Reuters Health via e-mail.

He is the senior author of the study and executive director of research at St Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

His team's findings were published in the journal Hypertension. The trial included 110 people who had been diagnosed with peripheral artery disease, in which plaque builds up in arteries in the leg. Patients with the condition often have high blood pressure.

The participants were randomly assigned to either a flaxseed or comparison group.

People in the flaxseed group ate a variety of foods - like bagels, muffins and pasta - which contained 30g of milled flaxseed every day for six months.

Those in the comparison group were given foods that tasted similar, but did not contain any flaxseed.

People who had an initial systolic blood pressure - the top number in a blood-pressure reading - of at least 140 mm Hg saw that figure drop by 15 mm Hg, on average, after six months of taking flaxseed.

Their diastolic blood pressure - the bottom number - also fell by 7 mm Hg. Blood pressure did not change among people with hypertension in the comparison group.

"These decreases in (blood pressure) are among the most potent dietary interventions observed and comparable to current medication," Dr Pierce said.

However, there was no flaxseed-related benefit for people with normal blood pressure.

The new study was partially funded by the Flax Council of Canada. It was not originally designed to study blood pressure, which means the results have to be interpreted with more caution.

PHOTO: Flaxseed Oil – Benefits of Flax Seed Oil
Flax Seed Oil comes from flax seeds, that are slightly bigger than sesame seeds and also have a hard but smooth and shiny shell. Their color ranges from deep amber to reddish brown with respect to the variety.

Research indicates that flax seeds are loaded with Omega-9 and Omega-3 efa’s.

OMEGA-3 fatty acids, often taken to boost health, appear to increase the risk of childhood allergies and prostate cancer, according to two studies unveiled last week.

Newborns with high levels of unsaturated fats in their blood were more prone to develop an allergy than those with lower blood concentrations, according to a probe by three Swedish universities.

"It is already known that unsaturated fatty acids inhibit activation of the immune system. This can be useful when you are old," Ms Agnes Wold, a physician at the clinical microbiology department of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska University Hospital, said in a statement. "But the baby's immune system needs to get a kick-start, otherwise it does not develop properly," she said.

Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain.  They appear to be an important factor in cognition, memory, and behavioral functioning.  Symptoms of Omega-3 deficiency include fatigue, poor memory, heart problems, depression, dry skin, nails, membranes, constipation, poor concentration, lack of physical endurance, joint pain and decreased circulation.

Previous research had indicated that children who at an early age were given fish, which is famously high in omega-3 fatty acids, were less likely to get an allergy.

Another author of the study, food-science professor Ann-Sofie Sandberg, cautioned against avoiding fish on the basis of these findings.

"Fish is so much more than just omega-3 fatty acids. One cannot conclude from our study that pregnant women and young children should not eat fish," she said.

Fish oil is not a magic bullet, but there are an infinite number of well-documented benefits for a whole host of lifestyle diseases and conditions.  The short answer is that EPA and DHA are specific types of polyunsatured omega-3 fatty acids.  Your body cannot produce these fatty acids – you must get them from the food you eat, or via supplementation.

Separately, a large study published in Britain's Journal Of The National Cancer Institute found that three omega-3 fatty acids were associated with an increase of between 43 and 71 per cent in the risk of developing prostate cancer.

The biggest rise in risk was for so-called high-grade prostate cancer, whose tumours are more likely to be fatal.

The study, led by scientists at the United States Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, amplifies previous findings in 2011 that suggested these fatty acids play an unexplained role in initiating prostate cancer.

"Recommendations to increase...(omega-3) intake, in particular through supplementation, should consider its potential risks," said the paper.

In May, an Italian-led study showed that fish-oil supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids were not beneficial for patients at high risk of cardiovascular troubles and already under medication.

Previous clinical trials had suggested the supplements could reduce cardiovascular risks for patients suffering from cardiovascular disease or who had already suffered cardiac arrest.

Why you think fish jump.
PHOTO: Why you think fish jump, you can say:
They like to tease fishermen. LOL.
They are shaking sea lice off their bellies.
They are jumping for food.
They are getting ready to spawn (to produce or deposit eggs).
They are finding their way home, or you can say,
They are just having fun.

The salmon jump to the surface to find the scent of their native stream. Then they float on top of the water to find their way home.

What will you say?
