Helen and Ivan have a lot to answer for. Because of them, children cried, parents complained and everyone memed.

This year's Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) mathematics paper was reportedly so brutal that you almost expect to win 45.6 billion Korean won (S＄51.5 million) in cash after surviving it.

But instead of the deadly games in Squid Game, 12-year-olds taking the exam apparently had to overcome such merciless questions like this one:

"Like every year, the examination paper has a balanced spread of test items of varying difficulties ranging from easy, moderate to challenging questions. We would like to assure parents that this year's paper was set to comparable standards (to) past years' papers...

So here are a few proposed questions for next year's PSLE to reflect the new normal:
  • Last Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported a total of 3,562 new Covid-19 cases in the community and migrant worker dormitories. If the number also came in second in the 4D draw that day, how much do you bet on the number of new local cases the next day?
  • On Saturday, Singapore announced that those who are fully vaccinated can travel to eight more countries: Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain and the US. How soon after did the Singapore Airlines website crash?
  • Of Singapore's population, 83 per cent have received two doses of Covid-19 vaccines and 85 per cent have received at least one dose. How many who refuse to be vaccinated will eventually take ivermectin because their "church friends" in Telegram chat groups tell them to?
  • Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong speaks for 25 minutes on the Covid-19 situation using 3,063 words. How many times does he drink from his magic cup?
  • Helen and Ivan are dating. She is vaccinated. He is not and doesn't want to be. From Wednesday, only those who are vaccinated will be allowed to enter malls and dine in (with a one-week grace period for malls). How long before Helen finds a new boyfriend? Oh, Ivan is also a cheapskate who always seems to have only coins with him.

'Tricky' PSLE maths question

The two-mark question, which requires some reasoning to arrive at the correct answer, has been called "tricky" and "disturbing".

It ignited discussion across online forums like KiasuParents, HardwareZone and Reddit, as well as news sites like Yahoo and Mothership.

In the comments thread of the Yahoo story, user Ah Tan said he had written to a school principal to give "feedback to the Ministry of Education (MOE)".

Other parents also said they had made complaints, without giving details.

In the same thread, a netizen named Michael said: "Every year there is this type of tricky question," adding that MOE should "rethink how to set PSLE questions in a straightforward manner".

On parenting forum KiasuParents, commenter Steffie said: "Our kids shouldn't be at the receiving end of badly set questions - as though the stress of PSLE isn't enough."

PHRASED CORRECTLY
Replying to queries by The New Paper, the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) assured the public that the question is phrased correctly, and assesses topics taught in the primary school mathematics syllabus.

Not all parents are upset over the question.

KiasuParents founder William Toh, whose 12-year-old daughter sat the PSLE this year, learnt about the hoo-ha from TNP.

He felt the upset parents were "overreacting".

He said: "Let the educators and examiners do their job.

"It's not the end of the world.

"If your child couldn't solve it, there will be others who couldn't solve it too.

"Some parents tend to be perfectionists, but they need to realise their children are human.

"There will be questions they cannot solve."

Mr Bhajan Singh, a 70-year-old ex-principal previously involved in the setting of examination papers, said parents should have faith in Singapore's education system instead of throwing a "tantrum".

"We have so many levels of preparation, so many checks and balances here when we set the papers," he told TNP.

"While the strong reaction is understandable, parents should know that the exam papers here are fair because the people preparing them would have taken pains to make sure they are thorough."

Clinical psychologist Carol Balhetchet, who specialises in family and youth, cautioned against parents starting complaint campaigns as it could encourage an entitled mindset in their children.

While she can understand their grievances, she said the PSLE's reputation of being challenging for young students is part of raising the bar.

"The real objective of exams should be to test if the children have studied enough, if they have followed the curriculum," she said.

Ms Olivia Chua, 42, whose younger son sat for the PSLE this year, felt there has been too much fuss over a two-mark question.

She said: "What's done is already done. The paper has been submitted.

"Parents are always involved in these online discussions to gauge how well their children can do, but it will only create unnecessary pressure for the children."

QUESTIONS ARE 'CLEAR, PART OF SYLLABUS'
The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) has rigorous processes in place for the development of national examination papers.

The panel behind the PSLE papers comprises experienced personnel from schools, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SEAB, its spokesman said in a written reply to The New Paper's queries.

They ensure that each paper adheres to a test blueprint, with questions that are clear and aligned with the syllabus and learning outcomes.

The spokesman said SEAB and MOE received feedback on the question that irked some parents and assured the public that it assesses topics taught in the primary school mathematics syllabus.

"It aims to assess candidates' ability to show their understanding and application of mathematical concepts in a given context," she added.

Ms Clara Tan, the subject head of upper primary math at The Learning Lab, United Square, shows how the question should be solved:

Length per roll: 2,500cm

Number of ribbons that can be cut to 110cm each per roll: 2,500 cm/110 cm = 22 R 8 cm ≈ 22 (rounded down)

This means 22 ribbons can be cut per roll, with the 8cm remainder being too short to be of any use and is therefore rounded down.

Number of rolls needed: 200/22 = 9 R 2 ≈ 10 (rounded up)

This means with 9 rolls, Jess is still short of 2 ribbons, so she needs another roll.

Therefore, the minimum number of rolls Jess needs to buy is 10.

"We hope that this collective expression of sympathy and support from all Singaporeans will give solace and comfort to the families and loved ones of the victims," said a statment from the Prime Minister's Office yesterday.

Six pupils and one teacher from Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) are confirmed to have died in the 6.0-magnitude earthquake on Friday. The Singaporean adventure guide who was with them on a field trip to Mount Kinabalu also died. Another pupil and a teacher are still unaccounted for.

The pupils who died are Peony Wee Ying Ping, Ameer Ryyan Mohd Adeed Sanjay, Emilie Giovanna Ramu, Matahom Karyl Mitzi Higuit, Rachel Ho Yann Shiuan and Sonia Jhala.

Teacher Loo Jian Liang Terrence Sebastian and guide Muhammad Daanish Amran also died. Operations are continuing to locate pupil Navdeep Singh Jaryal Raj Kumar and teacher Mohammad Ghazi Mohamed.

The statement said that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong "is deeply saddened by the deaths of (the) eight Singaporeans".

The Prime Minister also thanked all the people who worked tirelessly in the search, rescue and recovery efforts - the Malaysian authorities, the search and rescue teams, the hospital staff, and all the officers and volunteers who are helping in Sabah and Singapore, it said.

It hit Ranau, with the tremors felt in several areas including Tambunan, Pedalaman, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud. The Malaysian authorities said the quake had claimed 16 lives so far, including six Malaysians.

The quake struck near the picturesque Kota Kinabalu mountain, a popular tourist destination, sending landslides and huge granite boulders tumbling down from its wide, 4,095m-high crown.

Government officials, including those from the Ministry of Education, are in Kota Kinabalu, and are providing assistance and support to the families.

Arrangements are being made for the family members and the bodies to be flown back to Singapore as soon as possible.

Last evening, the body of 12-year-old Peony arrived at Jalan Tiga in Mountbatten. Her mother, Luo Jin, 43, was wailing as the coffin was rolled out from a white van to a multipurpose pavilion, where the five-day wake is being held.

Peony's older brother, 14-year-old Chester, put his arms around his mother, comforting her. More than 20 friends and relatives were also present as a Buddhist monk led a 15-minute prayer.

Peony's father, machine operator Alson Wee, 51, said she was a lovely, active girl who played netball and enjoyed wonton noodles.

"She was very loving, very helpful," said Mr Wee. "I will miss hearing her cheerful voice around the house."

Alumni and members of the public also visited TKPS to pen notes of hope and condolences at a site set up yesterday. It will remain open until tomorrow.

"Our prayers go out to those who are still missing. Come home safe," read one note from a concerned parent and her child.
