Nearly 10,000 people turned up at 14 7-Eleven outlets islandwide on Friday (Dec 9) to queue for the latest Hello Kitty ez-link charms.

The charms, which function like ez-link cards, come in two designs and cost $24.90 each.

Each customer is limited to only four charms, and the charms do not come with stored value.

At the 7-Eleven outlet at Block 807, Yishun Ring Road, some fans started queuing for the trinkets from midnight, even though the charms were launched only at 7am, Shin Min Daily News reported on Friday.

The queue snaked to a nearby coffee shop, with many coming with a friend for company.

Hello Kitty was actually a nickname for Kitty White, who was not Japanese but actually British and lives in London with her family. An artist work on the project and she came up with a drawing of a white that had a red bow in it's hair and was wearing blue overalls.
She had a twin sister named Mimmy. The only way you can tell the two apart was by their bows, Hello Kitty weared a red bow and Mimmy weared a yellow one.
She was in the third grade but when school's out she traveled the world making new friends. She was bright, kind-hearted, and loved the outdoors.
Someone who was a devoted follower of Hello Kitty was called "Kitira".
Favorite food: apple pie. Favorite word: friendship (of course). Height: five apples tall.
Please note that Hello Kitty did not has a mouth. She could not talk, and you couldn't know whether she was sad or happy. It was rumoured that she once had abusive parents and she couldn't ask for help.

A man in the queue at a store in Chua Chu Kang , who gave his name as Mr Hong, told Shin Min that he had started queueing from 7.30am.

The 55-year-old, who works at a herb store, said he managed to get his hands on two EZ-Charms only 40 minutes later.

"When I reached the store, there were already nearly 200 people in the queue. When I left after buying, there were still over 100 people waiting," he said.

Shin Min understands that the charms are sold out at at least one store - the one at Block 768, Woodlands Avenue 6.

More than 4,000 of the limited-edition charms were sold by 11am on Friday.

A spokesman for EZ-Link, which manages the sale, distribution and management of ez-link cards, told Shin Min that the Hello Kitty charms were launched in April last year.

There have been four designs so far.

The company did not comment on sales figures.

It added that customers who are interested in new products can refer to the EZ-Link Facebook page for more updates.

Other than Hello Kitty EZ-Charms, EZ-Link has previously sold Star Wars and Batman V Superman charms.

There are various popular versions of the Hello Kitty, like The Saint and The Devil.

HELLO Kitty is not a cat, the company behind Japan's global icon of cute insisted yesterday, despite an uproar from Internet users who spluttered: "But she's got whiskers!"

The moon-faced creation which adorns everything from pencil cases to pyjamas the world over is, in fact, human.

"Hello Kitty is a cheerful and happy little girl with a heart of gold," brand owner Sanrio said on its website.

The shocking revelation came to light when a Hawaii-based academic specialising in the epitome of "kawaii" ("cute" in Japanese) asked Sanrio to fact-check captions for an exhibition she was curating to mark the 40th anniversary of Hello Kitty.

Christine Yano, an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii, told the Los Angeles Times that she "was corrected - very firmly" by Sanrio that Kitty was not a cat.

"That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show," the paper quoted her as saying.

"Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. 
 
She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature."

And indeed, an AFP inquiry as to the status - feline or otherwise - of one of Japan's most famous exports confirmed her non-cat identity.

"It is a 100 per cent personified character," a Sanrio spokesman told AFP in Tokyo. "The design takes the motif of a cat, but there is no element of a cat in Hello Kitty's setting."

Her real name is Kitty White, he explained, and she was born in southern England on Nov 1, 1974. She is a Scorpio with blood type A.

She has a twin sister, Minny White, and lives in an unnamed suburb of London with father George and mother Mary, according to her profile on the Web.

Despite her whiskers and pointy ears, just like the rest of her family, Kitty has her own pet - a "real" cat named Charmmy Kitty.

Her life story has always been there, the spokesman said, adding the personification is meant to make her fans feel closer to the character "as a friend".

Asked about the worldwide reaction to the revelation that Hello Kitty is not a cat, the spokesman said: "I don't think anyone in Japan found it surprising."

A poll of Japanese people within the AFP Tokyo bureau found that not to be the case.

The spokesman explained that Kitty and her family were given no specific nationality but were designed to be living in Britain, because many girls in Japan had strong admiration for the Western lifestyle in the 1970s.
