The record of the daughter of Jairus is a combination of miracles of Jesus in the Gospels (Mark 5:21–43, Matthew 9:18–26, Luke 8:40–56)

The story immediately follows the exorcism at Gerasa. Jairus, a patron or ruler of a Galilee synagogue, had asked Jesus to heal his 12-year-old daughter, who in Mark's and Luke's accounts was dying, and in Matthew's simplified account, had already died.

As they were traveling to Jairus' house, a sick woman in the crowd touched Jesus' cloak and was healed of her sickness. Jesus turned round to the woman and said "You have been healed of your sins have faith in the Lord".(see Christ healing the bleeding woman). Moments later, a messenger arrived with the news that Jairus' daughter had died, and he was advised not to trouble Jesus any further. However, Jesus responded: "Be not afraid, only believe." (Mark 5:36)

In Mark's account, the Aramaic phrase "Talitha Koum" (transliterated into Greek as ταλιθα κουμ and meaning, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!") is attributed to Jesus.

The combined stories have been used as an example of intercalation, where one incident is inserted within another, linked in this case by the connection between the 12-year ailment and the 12-year-old girl. [4]

Interpretations
John Donahue and Daniel Harrington state that this episode shows that "faith, especially as embodied by the bleeding woman, can exist in seemingly hopeless situations".[5]

Michael Keene states that there is a link between Jairus and the woman: "The link between them is faith since both Jairus and the bleeding woman showed great faith in Jesus".[6]

3 cases a day of sudden cardiac death in S'pore

That's around three cases a day.

Half of these deaths occur in people under 60, of which more than 90 per cent are men with a median age of 47.

The median age of women is slightly higher at 50.

Though it is rare, even the young and fit can be struck by this condition.

They could be athletes who do extreme sports or take part in endurance races, putting their heart under a lot of stress, said Dr Eric Hong.

Or they could be what the cardiologist at EH Heart Specialist calls the "weekend warriors".

According to the National Heart Centre Singapore, it can be due to a variety of heart conditions.

The most common cause is a sudden onset of abnormal heart rhythm - a fast but chaotic heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia.

When this happens, the heart beats at 400 to 500 beats per minute, causing the normal rhythmic contractions of the lower chambers of the heart to stop.

Blood and oxygen cannot be pumped to the rest of the body, and the brain is starved of oxygen within seconds.

The person loses consciousness as a result.

This is different from a heart attack, which is due to a blockage or occlusion of the arteries supplying blood to the heart.

This causes a portion of the heart muscle to be damaged, and may or may not lead to sudden cardiac death.

Sometimes there is confusion between the terms "cardiac arrest" and "heart attack." A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is damage to the heart muscle that occurs due to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, depriving the heart muscle of the oxygen it needs to function properly. Cardiac arrest means that the heart stops beating and death is imminent. A heart attack, if severe, can lead to cardiac arrest, and this is what occurs when a heart attack is fatal. However, other conditions, such as serious arrhythmias or shock, can also cause cardiac arrest. [2]

EXTREME STRESS
In those who do endurance races, the body is subjected to extreme stress in the final push.

Sudden cardiac death is most likely to happen in the final 1.6km of a 42km marathon, said Dr Hong.

"It (is) known that the final sprint with sudden cessation has also been associated with greater risk.

"This is when sportsmen and women are exhausted, but with the encouragement of the crowd at the finishing line are pushing beyond their physical limits," he said.

He added that it is twice more likely to occur in triathletes than marathon runners, with the occurrence most common in the swimming leg of the event.

"Health screening can identify certain high-risk groups. And if one is at a high risk of sudden cardiac death, then the doctor would usually suggest that the individual avoid competitive sports," said Dr Hong.

IT'S strange. You know you're going to die, people you know have died, you hear about natural disasters, terminal illnesses, terrorist attacks, freak accidents and yet, somehow, you grow up thinking you're invincible.

"You only live once," you are wont (accustomed) to reason - ironically - for the reckless stunts you pull.

But then one day, it just hits you: "What's the point of it all if it's going to end?"

I don't remember the specifics of that moment, but it appears there was no great catalyst for this existential crisis. I just remember the weeks of troubled sleep that followed.

I couldn't come to terms with the fact that it could all end so suddenly - work unfinished, words unsaid - because of something as random as lightning. And while I didn't really want to know when and how I was going to die, living with this unknown made me feel powerless.

I began to question every little thing I was doing, and despaired at the seeming senselessness of it. I thought of the years ahead of me in increments of 10 and panicked at how quickly I was getting old.

And so it was that, at 25, I freaked out at the first sign of eye bags. In my bleakest moments, I would think about life after death, and wonder if the concept was created as a coping mechanism for the vein of anxiety I was going through.

And then it dawned on me: "What's the point of it all if it's NOT going to end?"

I point this out to say that this overwhelming awareness of mortality can sucker-punch you while you're washing the dishes. And, while it is frightening, venture into the darkness. Feel your way through the layout.

There will be a light switch somewhere.

Death gives life direction and urgency. Without an end, we'd all be walking aimlessly, counting on Little Orphan Annie's never-ending tomorrow. Imagine if you had a thousand years to live; would you really make the most out of it? Read all the great books? Visit the seven continents? Try to make a difference? Unlikely.

Estimating that I have about 50 years more to live has put my priorities in order. Cheesy as it sounds, I wake up every day with a sense of purpose, knowing everything I do is a step closer towards a goal.

I've embraced a little bit of prudence. I think long term, unknowns factored in. I've learnt to value time, to say no, to eat my vegetables.

In the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity, the turning point for its central character, Rob Fleming, begins with this realisation: "I always had one foot out the door, and that prevented me from doing a lot of things, like thinking about my future and... I guess it made more sense to commit to nothing, keep my options open."

For the longest time, I've had this relationship with life. Death changed all that.
