DALLAS - REGULAR nut eaters were less likely to die of cancer or heart disease - in fact, they were less likely to die of any cause - during a 30-year Harvard study.

Nuts have long been called heart-healthy, and the study is the largest on whether eating them affects mortality.

Researchers tracked 119,000 men and women and found that those who ate nuts roughly every day were 20 per cent less likely to die during the study period than those who never ate nuts.

The risk of dying of heart disease dropped 29 per cent and the risk of dying of cancer fell 11 per cent among those who had nuts seven or more times a week, compared with people who never ate them.

Even among those who did not eat nuts every day, eating nuts lowered the death risk in direct proportion to consumption.

The benefits were derived from eating peanuts as well as from pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts. The researchers did not look at how the nuts were prepared.

A bonus: Nut eaters stayed slimmer.

Research on diets is especially tough, because it can be difficult to single out the effects of any one food.

Dr Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and former president of the American Heart Association, said that people who eat more nuts may eat them on salads, for example, and some of the benefit may come from the leafy greens.

Dr Ralph Sacco, a University of Miami neurologist who is also a former heart-association president, agreed.

"Sometimes when you eat nuts, you eat less of something else, like potato chips", so the benefit may come from avoiding an unhealthy food, he said.

Many previous studies tie nut consumption to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and other maladies.

Dr Penny Kris-Etherton, a Pennsylvania State University nutrition scientist, said: "We're seeing benefits of nut consumption on cardiovascular disease as well as body weight and diabetes.

"We don't know exactly what it is about nuts that boosts health or which ones are best. I tell people to eat mixed nuts."

The Tribute In Light, in honour of those who died on Sept 11, 2001, returns to New York City this year, as the United States marks the 12th anniversary of the terror attacks tonight. Tested on Monday, the twin beams met the still-under-construction Tower One as they rose behind the building above Lower Manhattan.

The clouds covered the September 11th skies through much of the day and into the sunset. Only in the morning hours of September 12th did the clouds clear allowing the Tribute in Light to fade into the morning skies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States of America.

Each year since the tragic terrorist attacks on NYC’s twin towers, on every September 11th since 2001, the Municipal Art Society has shone two bright lights skyward from Manhattan's Financial District. Known as the Tribute of Light, the beams have struck an emotional chord with a lot of residents. This year, more than 10,000 birds flew into the beams and got trapped, unable to fly away. Because they are in their fall migration, the birds could be depleting crucial fat stores by flying endlessly in the light beams, unable to get away and continue their journey south.

New York City Audubon has kept an eye on the light tribute, and when they saw the gathering of helpless birds, let the Municipal Art Society know so they could shut down the beams (Migratory birds are protected by federal law).

Exactly one year after the Tribute in Light at ground zero drew thousands of migrating birds into its beams, the night of September 11 passed without avian incident.

New York City Audubon volunteers who monitored the lights all night reported a peak of about 100 birds around 2 a.m., and about 700 altogether. It was a far cry from last year, when an estimated 10,000 birds were caught over the course of the night, circling in confusion until the lights were temporarily shuttered five separate times.

That night was almost perfectly designed to lure birds traveling down the Atlantic Flyway, one of North America’s four major conduits for birds migrating to South and Central America. Several nights of storms kept birds grounded in the wetlands north of New York City; on the night of Sept. 11, a favorable tailwind released them, but dense cloudcover hid the stars birds use to navigate and calibrate inborn geomagnetic compasses.

The Tribute in Light‘s bank of 88 7,000-watt xenon searchlights dominated the sky.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Cellphone pioneer Motorola says it's opening a manufacturing facility that will produce the first smartphone ever assembled in the U.S. — its new flagship device, Moto X.

The Texas site was once used by fellow phone manufacturer Nokia, meaning it was designed to produce mobile devices, said Will Moss, a spokesman for Motorola Mobility, which is owned by Google.

"It was a great facility in an ideal location," said Moss, who said it will be an easy trip for Motorola engineering teams based in Chicago and Silicon Valley, and is also close to the company's service and repair operations in Mexico.

The formal announcement came from Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside at AllThingsD's D11 Conference.

The factory will create 2,000 jobs and will be owned and run by Flextronics International Ltd., a Singapore-based contract electronics manufacturer that has had a long relationship with Motorola.

Assembly accounts for relatively little of the cost of a smartphone. The cost largely lies in the chips, battery and display, most of which come from Asian factories. For instance, research firm iSuppli estimates that the components of Samsung's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, cost $229, while the assembly cost $8.

In December, Apple Inc. said it would move manufacturing of one of its existing lines of Mac computers to the U.S. this year, reversing decades of increasing outsourcing. The company has come under some criticism for working conditions at the Chinese factories where its products are assembled.

Some other manufacturers, such as Hewlett-Packard Co., have kept some PC assembly operations in the U.S.Moss said the Moto X will go on sale this summer. He said he could provide few details, citing priority secrets.

Motorola will still have global manufacturing operations, including at factories in China and Brazil.

Google‘s wholly owned subsidiary Motorola Mobility is allegedly to be developing on a “sophisticated” smartphone that will “provide more potent competition” to the Apple iPhone, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

The device, which is has a codename internally as “X Phone,” will reportedly be equipped with a “top-end” camera sensor and imaging software technology, which previous Google-branded Nexus smartphone devices have lacked. Motorola Mobility is also reported to be interested in using a bendable and unbreakable screen display and elements that would make the X Phone stronger and more durable.

The X Phone will reportedly be launched this year, at which point Motorola engineers will be starting on gearing up to develop on an “X tablet.”
