Reflection - Psalm 18:1-6 - The Lord Is My Rock

Source (book): "My Soul Thirsts For God", Reflections on the Psalms from Our Daily Bread, Psalm 18:1-6, "The Lord Is My Rock", Page 34.

Psalm 18:1-6
PHOTO: Psalm 18:1-6
I love you, O Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I am saved from my enemies.

The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.

The Lord Is My Rock
It turns out that we humans reason largely by means of our hearts and not by our heads. As French mathematician and theologian Blaise Pascal noted long ago, "The heart has reasons that reason does not know."

Poets, singers, storytellers, and artists have always known this. They use symbols and metaphors that speak to our hearts rather than to our minds. That's why their ideas penetrate where everything else has failed. And that's why we say, "
A picture is worth a thousand words." Images remain in our minds when all else is forgotten.

David wrote, "
The Lord is my rock, my fortress . . . my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold" (Psalm 18:2). He was thinking of physical elements that convey spiritual realities. Each picture expresses a deeper thought, linking the visible world to the invisible realm of the Spirit. David doesn't wander into definition and explanation, for explanation can blunt imagination. Each picture is left hanging in our minds - images that evoke mystery, arouse our imagination, and deepen our understanding.

David wakes up what is hidden deep within us. It's good to think long thoughts about it. What does this mean to you: God is my rock, my fortress, my shield?

What does this mean to you: God is my rock, my fortress, my shield? (from Google)
This expression uses powerful metaphors to describe God as a source of unwavering support, protection, and security.

These metaphors highlight God's role as a provider of strength, protection, and solace, especially during times of difficulty. He is the one we can turn to for help, guidance, and a sense of security.

In essence, these metaphors paint a picture of God as our constant companion, a source of strength and protection, and a place of refuge in times of need. He is the one we can trust to stand with us through all our challenges and trials.

Dear Lord,
PHOTO: "Dear Lord, as David had written, 'The Lord is my rock, my fortress . . . my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.' May we also be thinking of physical elements that convey spiritual realities. Each picture expresses a deeper thought, linking the visible world to the invisible realm of the Spirit.

May these metaphors paint a picture of God as our constant companion, a source of strength and protection, and a place of refuge in times of need. He is the one we can trust to stand with us through all our challenges and trials.

Through Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
