KOTA KINABALU: A grisly discovery of two monitor lizards feeding on the corpse of an infant has shocked villagers at a water settlement in the east coast Semporna district.
Semporna police chief Supt Peter Umbuas said they were alerted of the incident at about 3.34pm yesterday.
He said the corpse was noticed by a villager who was bathing her children.
Supt Peter said the woman saw the two reptiles at a rubbish pile near her house feeding on what appeared to be an infant's corpse.
After alerting her neighbours they then shooed away the monitor lizards and placed the remains of the infant in a container and called the police.
Supt Peter said the corpse had been sent to the district hospital for a post-mortem.

The two monitor lizards resorted to fight it out. They have to stand on their two hind legs to out-push one another. This was quite similar to our sumo wrestling, once locked, tremendous pushing started.

The fighting lasted only for 10 to 15 seconds. The one that fell first would be the looser. It then has to leave the territory promptly.

The winner may not be shy all the time, as we were about to discover. It could be annoyed by having too much attentions. Rightly it could be, because its natural habitat was being intruded by both challenger of its own kind and human beings.

Double confirmed. We were in dangerous position. One last final photo shot and we had to make our escape. It's now or never.
I remembered somebody ever told me: "Unity is strength. United we stand". I looked around, all my companions had disappeared. It was more appropriate: "Run to survive!". Reptiles have no respect for human's rules and regulations.

Somebody uttered a high-pitched piercing sound , as an expression of terror (shriek), but I felt no pain.
