PHOTO: Make a list of people you have imitated or are imitating at the moment. What in their lifes do you find worth imitating?
It may be challenging to observe and imitate an invisible God, but we have no excuse when it comes to godly people, for we can hear, see, touch, and relate to them.
We can follow godly people as they imitate Christ - in their way of life, faith in Christ, faithfulness, love, graciousness, righteousness, response to trials, and prayerfulness. Though they are not perfect, we can emulate them in loving God and others, and in living as the blessed, beloved children of God.
It could be a family member, such as a father who lives righteously and generously, a prayerful and faithful mother, or a sibling who loves and serves the Lord with deep commitment and passion. It could be a Sunday school teacher whose patience and gentleness inspire, or a Bible study leader whose hospitality and peaceful countenance (facial expression) are exemplary. It could even be a child who grasps the implications of spiritual truth better and more readily than most adults.
Other human models may live further away in terms of space and time, such as Christian thinkers, workers, missionaries, pastors, and ordinary people around the world who have led inspiring lives. Or we may have read of those from the past, such as Polycarp, Augustine, Bernard of Clairvaux, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, Hudson Taylor, Charles Spurgeon, C. S. Lewis, and John Stott.
The "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews II contains portraits of those who shone in their faith and trust in God - Abraham, Moses, Samuel, and countless others. Today, this hall is much larger; many more portraits hang on its walls.
We can therefore seek our good Christian biographies and learn from their examples of godliness. By observing saints past and present, near and far, we can seek to follow them in the way they imitated Christ.
Simply imitating human models, however, has its limitations. No human model is perfect. If we look closely, we will find imperfections - a quick temper, envy, or pride. While it is good and helpful to imitate godly Christians, it cannot compare to imitating Christ himself.

For many centuries, the popular image of a good Christian was the monk cloistered (enclosed) in his monastery, away from the world, and constantly toiling (work extremely hard) in prayer. In the late medieval period, however, this changed. A new spiritual movement called devotio moderna (modern devotion) arose, and in contrast to the focus on clergy and rituals in the medieval church, it called for personal piety.

This movement called for personal piety in response to the dry intellectual scholasticism and ritualism of the clergy-centred medieval church. Beginning in Holland during the 14th century and spreading to other parts of Europe, it remained popular until the 16th century. Names associated with this movement include Geert Groot, Florens Radewyns, and most notably Thomas à Kempis, whose book The Imitation of Christ became highly influential.

The movement also had an extensive intellectual heritage and can be connected with people like Francis of Assisi, Bonaventure (both from the 13th century), and Ignatius of Loyola (16th century). The common thread in their teachings was a new emphasis - the goal of the Christian life was to learn how to live as Christ did. Richard Foster explains this in Longing for God: "By replacing the ideal of the cloistered life with the growing belief that we were to express in word, thought and spirit, the very life and teaching of Jesus, this new approach recovered the essence of the New Testament message." Francis of Assisi had this "Primitive Rule": "To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in His footsteps". [35] He had begun life as a wealthy youth who loved the pleasures of this world, but the experience of military campaigning and a serious illness took away his taste for worldly things. He then had a special experience in which Christ commanded him to rebuild His church and embrace poverty as a way of life. Francis abandoned his wealth and status to become a poor monk. He sought to emulate Jesus in every way, living an extremely simple life and giving of himself in humble service and love to others. In his later life, he is said to have developed the stigmata - wounds on his hands, feet, and chest that mirrored the wounds of Christ on the cross. However these wounds might be explained, for Francis, his life goal of seeking to imitate Christ had reached its climactic fruition.

Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish knight who had a conversion experience after being severely wounded in war. He developed his Spiritual Exercises, a series of meditations essentially based on the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. They involve engaging with the gospel text to personally take part in the biblical stories and thereby encounter Jesus. The aim is to follow Jesus and imitate Him.

Godly People: A Model for Us [1]
It may be challenging to observe and imitate an invisible God, but we have no excuse when it comes to godly people, for we can hear, see, touch, and relate to them. Thus Paul reminded his protégé Timothy about "my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings" (2 Timothy 3:10-11). It was a legacy to be observed and imitated.

PHOTO: We can follow godly people as they imitate Christ - in their way of life, faith in Christ, faithfulness, love, graciousness, righteousness, response to trials, and prayerfulness. Though they are not perfect, we can emulate them in loving God and others, and in living as the blessed, beloved children of God.

If you look carefully, you will find Christ-like people to learn from.

There exist other human models that live further away in terms of space and time. You may have heard of Christian thinkers, workers, missionaries, pastors, and ordinary people around the world who have led inspiring lives. Or you may have read of those from the past, such as Polycarp, Augustine, Bernard of Clairvaux, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, Hudson Taylor, Charles Spurgeon, C. S. Lewis, and John Stott.

For this reason, reading Christian biographies is an important discipline. There is so much material available, and it would be a pity to ignore the legacy that these people have left us. The "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews II contains portraits of those who shone in their faith and trust in God - Abraham, Moses, Samuel, and countless others. Today, this hall is much larger; many more portraits hang on its walls. But this hall is not visited often enough, and many Christians remain ignorant of these stories about faithful saints and servants of God.

Following human Christian models is like travelling at night by the light of the moon. Though the sun is absent, its light is reflected by the moon and illuminates our path, allowing us to walk around without too much difficulty. When the sun rises in the morning, however, we will witness its full brilliance as the true source of light - light that gives life and enables things to grow. In the same way, while it is good and helpful to imitate godly Christians, it cannot compare to imitating Christ himself.

PHOTO: "Dear Lord, Please help us to follow godly people as they imitate Christ - in their way of life, faith in Christ, faithfulness, love, graciousness, righteousness, response to trials, and prayerfulness. Though they are not perfect, we can emulate them in loving God and others, and in living as the blessed, beloved children of God.
Help us to seek our good Christian biographies and learn from their examples of godliness. Help us to observe saints past and present, near and far, and seek to follow them in the way they imitated Christ.
Make us realise that while it is good and helpful to imitate godly Christians, it cannot compare to imitating Christ himself.
Through Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen!"
