In this June 8, 1972, file photo, 9-year-old Kim Phuc, center, runs with her brothers and cousins, followed by South Vietnamese forces, down Route 1 near Trang Bang after a South Vietnamese plane accidentally dropped its flaming napalm on its own troops and civilians. The terrified girl had ripped off her burning clothes while fleeing. In late September 2015, Phuc, 52, began a series of laser treatments at the Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute to smooth and soften the pale, thick scar tissue that she has endured for more than 40 years.

The image of a napalm scarred little girl running from her burning village in Vietnam is one of the most well known photographs in the world.
The year after the Napalm Girl photo was taken, the United States and North Vietnam came to a shaky ceasefire that gave America all the excuse it needed to cut and run. The war continued, however, between Saigon and Hanoi. [2]
Photojournalist Nick Ut is retiring, in the same year that his famous picture 'Napalm Girl' turns 45, ending his 51-year career with the Associated Press. Nick Ut's Photo 'Napalm Girl' had changed the Vietnam War.

Kim Phuc, the girl featured in the image, is now receiving free laser surgery to cover her scars, 40 years after that terrible day. However the famous photograph displays far more than a young girl’s suffering, and has since become a symbol of war and human brutality.

PHOTO: Kim displays her lingering scars from the incident that set the course for her life. "Napalm Girl" shocked the world — and ended up a motivational speaker in Canada.
The year after the Napalm Girl photo was taken, the United States and North Vietnam came to a shaky ceasefire that gave America all the excuse it needed to cut and run. The war continued, however, between Saigon and Hanoi, and there hangs a tale.
Burns covered roughly 50 percent of Kim’s body, and doctors at the hospital were grim about her odds of survival. Over the next 14 months, Kim would get 17 surgeries, but she was left with serious restrictions in her range of movement that would last for ten years, until she got reconstructive surgery in West Germany in 1982. The naked woman in the Washington Square Park fountain turned at least a few heads. “Stop the War” was painted in red across her backside, down her legs and over her breasts. She had also scrawled something in Arabic that this reporter could not decipher.

Curious tourists craned their necks to get a better look. A few people lounging on the fountain steps applauded lamely. The nude woman, a 49-year-old (2005) Syrian artist named Hala Faisal, pumped her fist toward her supporters. She circled the inside of the fountain several times until a police officer approached and asked her to put her clothes back on, which she did without ceremony. She was then led away to a waiting police car and hurried off to the Sixth Precinct.
