PHOTO: Jesus is the Messiah (Matthew 16:16), the Son of the living God who came to earth to die in our place and win for us true forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life. He is one of the three Persons in the divine Godhead. He is our Creator, our Physician, our Saviour and the Heir of all things.
He is our Creator: Jesus is God who is involved in creating the universe and each one of us (John 1:1-3). He knows how we have been put together and how we have fallen apart, and He alone is able to put us back together again in the way that He originally intended. He knows exactly how we tick, what we need, and how we can be healed. Jesus knows exactly how we function and malfunction.
He is our Physician: Jesus, who created us and knows all about us, can offer profound healing and healed us fully - physically, socially, and spiritually. Like the bleeding woman (Mark 5:25-34), we need to deliberately reach out and touch Jesus. We need to respond intentionally, no one comes to Jesus carelessly. Only then will we find the true Healer and be healed.
He is our Saviour: Our basic problems all stem from our sinfulness and all involve death. We had since the beginning of mankind, sadly and tragically, disobeyed God and sinned. Since all men are sinners, none of us can die in the place of another. So God had to come to earth as Jesus of Nazareth, for He alone is sinless and thus able to die for the sins of others. But Jesus also had to be fully human so that He could die as our substitute. As the unique God-Man, He is our Saviour (Hebrews 2:14-18).
He is the Heir of all things: One day in the future, Jesus will inherit everything. He is the "heir of all things" (Hebrews 1:2) and the sole inheritor of everything, because all things belong to Him. He is the rightful owner. "Life does not consists in an abundance of possessions" (Luke 12:15). The man who appeared to be rich in worldly terms was in fact a poor beggar, with a shrivelled soul and a bleak future. The essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. It was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind. When we look up at the skies and see the universe, we are reminded that God made and owns everything. This truth challenges our illusions of being creator and owners. Only God is the true Creator and Owner of everything. Jesus is the Heir of all things and owns everything.
We need to search our hearts and face our guilt. The call "Come to Me" has been issued from someone who knows exactly how we tick, what we need, and how we can be healed. We need to deliberately reach out and touch Jesus. We need to respond intentionally, no one comes to Jesus carelessly. Only then will we find the true Healer and be healed. We need to listen to Jesus' call, for it comes from the One who is the Heir of all things and who owns everything.

Reflect on who Jesus is. Which of the four truths (that He is our Creator, our Physician, our Saviour, and the Heir of all things) appeals to you most? Why?
Reflect on who Jesus is.
Jesus is the most important Person in history. We all know who Jesus is. As His disciple Simon Peter confessed, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). The Messiah, who came to earth to die in our place and win for us true forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life, is one of the three Persons in the divine Godhead. Our Creator [1]
Jesus is God who is involved in creating the universe and each one of us
Because He is God, Jesus was there when time, space, and everything else was created. As the apostle John wrote, "the Word" was with God and was also God: "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made" (John 1:1-3). In Greek, the term translated as "the Word" is logos, which means "expression of a thought". In this context, it refers to the total message of God to man, which is embodied by Jesus. John is therefore saying that Jesus was with God from the very beginning, and is God. The writer of Hebrews 1:2 noted that God the Father made the universe through Jesus His Son. Jesus was thus intimately involved in creating not just the universe, but each one of us as well.

Jesus is our Creator
Since Jesus is the one who created us, He knows all about us (Psalm 139:1-3, 13-16). He knows how we function and malfunction. When you are not well, you see a doctor, hoping that he will know what is wrong with your body and how to fix it. You assume that he knows how your body works, and will be able to make the right diagnosis. But doctors can be wrong; they may not make the right diagnosis. They may know how the bodies function in general, but they may not fully understand how your body works. When they see you, they use their skills and try to apply their general knowledge of human bodies to a particular knowledge of your body to discern what is wrong with you. Only then will they be able to prescribe treatment that can really help you.

Medical science is based on genetic variations of physical body
Modern medical science is researching tailor-made therapies based on genetic variations. Not everyone responds to a particular medication in the same way. But if your genetic make-up is more fully known, doctors can provide the right medication in the right doses and combinations, ensuring maximum therapeutic effect with minimal side effect.

We have more than a physical body (we have a mind and a soul)
But you are more than a physical body. You have a mind and a soul. The doctor may not fully understand these even if he tries. He may treat your body with anti-depressant medication if you are feeling down, but he may not have sufficient soul-craft to deal with your grief or anxiety. When this happens, you may become disheartened and start hopping from doctor to doctor, searching for one who can give you a more comprehensive and lasting cure.
Jesus knows exactly how we function and malfunction
Unlike doctors who may not get it right all the time, Jesus knows exactly how we function and malfunction. He not only knows how human bodies function in general, but how each of our bodies works. And He understands that we are more than a physical body; that we have a mind and a soul too. Therefore, He knows how we have been put together and how we have fallen apart, and He alone is able to put us back together again in the way that He originally intended. The call "Come to Me" has been issued from someone who knows exactly how we tick, what we need, and how we can be healed.

Our Physician [1]
Jesus healed the bleeding woman fully - physically, socially, and spiritually
During His public ministry on earth, Jesus met a woman who had suffered greatly from a bleeding condition for 12 years (Mark 5:25-34). She had consulted many doctors, but her condition had only worsened. Luke 8:43 notes that "no one can heal her" ailment, and that the poor woman had used up all money trying to find a cure.

The woman was likely to have been avoided by others because her condition would have made her ritually unclean, and anyone who came into contact with her would have also been considered as such (Leviticus 15:25-33). Her condition was probably an embarrassing one, physically as well as socially. She was also likely to have been troubled by God's apparent indifference to her pleas for healing over the years. Was God punishing her for committing some sins? What a terrible and demoralising situation to be in!

Then she heard the only name that mattered. We don't know who told her about Jesus, but somehow she had come to hear about this amazing preacher and healer who taught with authority, and whose eyes reflected a holiness and compassion never seen before. Her hopes rose within her as she resolved to try one more physician - one whom she had no money left to pay. The woman had no opportunity to meet Jesus in private, for there was a large crowd following Him. Even if she were to push herself to the front, what could she say to Him? How could she tell Him about her embarrassing condition in the presence of the crowd? So she resolved to try something else; hidden in the crowd, she squeezed in near Jesus and stretched out her hands to touch His cloak, thinking to herself, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed" (Mark 5:28).

Remarkably, she was healed immediately: "Her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering" (Mark 5:29).
Quietly rejoicing that she had been healed at last and in such a miraculous way, the woman must have thought of slipping away, But Jesus knew what had happened, and asked, "Who touched me?" (Mark 5:30). Trembling with fear, the woman fell at His feet and confessed. Jesus, however, was not looking to scold her. Instead, He commended her for her faith, telling her, "Go in peace and he freed from your suffering" (Mark 5:34). He also addressed her in a unique way, calling her "Daughter" - a term He did not use directly with any other woman in the Gospels. Jesus gave the woman dignity and assured her that she was truly a daughter of God. He raised her status in front of the crowd; now she could hold her head high and be freed of her embarrassing condition. Jesus had healed her fully - physically, socially, and spiritually. Only Jesus, who created us and knows all about us, can offer such profound healing.

Respond to the call of the heavenly Physician, Jesus
When you hear Jesus call, "Come to Me", you are hearing a call from your creator, the heavenly Physician who can truly heal you. It would be wise to heed His voice and to respond to His call, for your hope is found in Him. Many people ignore Him or do not realise who He really is. Others may come into contact with things associated with Him, like church or Christian activities. But like the crowd that jostled Jesus, their contact with Jesus may be merely accidental.

"How sad," Chinese church pioneer Watchman Nee once lamented, "that there were so many who pressed upon Him and only one touched Him?" [1a] Or as early church father St. Augustine put it, "Flesh presses, faith touches." [2]

Our Saviour [1]
Jesus is not only our Creator and Physician, but is also our Saviour. But why would we need a Saviour?
Many people think they are doing pretty well in life, so they do not feel the need for a Saviour
If you think you are healthy, you will not see the need for a doctor. In the same way, Only then will they pray to God for help. It has been said that there are no atheists in foxholes. It is when the bombs are falling all around that soldiers cry out to God. And it is when we find ourselves facing circumstances beyond our control that we turn to God.

Mistreating God as an emergency hotline
Of course, we may end up treating God like an emergency hotline - like those we call when we lose our credit card, when our car breaks down, or when we are injured and need medical care. An emergency number is forgotten when things are going well; it is stored in our wallets or mobile phones, retrieved only when we need help. In the same way, we may see God as a divine helper whose intervention is required only when we are suffering from unexpected circumstances, but whose presence we ignore when things are fine. But is Jesus this kind of Saviour?

Our sinfulness involve death
The Bible diagnosed the human condition as such: our basic problems all stem from our sinfulness and all involve death. After God had created Adam and Eve, the first humans, and placed them in the Garden of Eden, He told them they could eat from all the trees except the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" (Genesis 2:16-17). He also warned them that if they ate the forbidden fruit, they would surely die. Sadly and tragically, they disobeyed God and did exactly that - and that is when sin and death entered the story of the human race.

Instinctive knowledge connecting sin and death
Ever since then, we have carried the guilty burden of sin and a deep anxiety about death within us. We resort to all kinds of mental tricks to deny this, but in vain. It is like trying to beat a lie detector. Even if you deny that you are doing something wrong, for example, your physiology will betray your guilt - your heartbeat and respiration will increase and you will start sweating a bit, and these changes will be picked up by the lie detector. Likewise, it seems like our bodies are programmed to tell us that we have done something wrong. We know we have sinned (Romans 3:23) and missed the mark; we know we have broken God's laws, so we instinctively feel guilty for our sin, and anxious about eventual death. Notice that when we are in serious trouble, we often say, "Sure die!" or "We're dead!"? We seem to have an instinctive knowledge of the connection between sin and death - a connection originally made by God.

According to American philosopher and anthropologist Ernest Becker, civilisation is man's way of denying death. [3] We accumulate "immortality symbols" such as wealth, power, and earthly achievements to allay our fear that we will have to die one day.

Only Jesus can save us from both sin and death
Only Jesus can save us from both sin and death. Jesus died on the cross in our place, carrying our sins and all the punishment they bring. That's why His disciple John said, "He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 2:2), and John the Baptist testified, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). Only Jesus could have done this, because He is fully God and fully man; there is no one like Him.

Jesus' took our place, removing sin's curse in our lives
Through His death, Jesus removed the guilt of sin that has stuck stubbornly to our souls. Nothing can remove that stain except the blood of Jesus that was shed for us on the cross. He took our place, thus removing sin's curse in our lives (Galatians 3:13).
PHOTO: By the Old Testament Law we have sinned, and the punishment for sin is death. In order for us to go to heaven, God’s dwelling place and the realm of life and light, sin must be somehow removed or paid for. The Law established the fact that cleansing from sin can only happen through the bloody sacrifice of an innocent life (Hebrews 9:22). None of us is innocent. That is the bad news.
The gospel of Christ is the good news of His coming to provide forgiveness of sins for all who will believe (Colossians 1:14; Romans 10:9). The bad news that all are guilty of sin and condemned by God is countered by the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ. God, because of His love for the world, has made a way for man to be forgiven of their sins (John 3:16). He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take the sins of mankind on Himself through death on a cross (1 Peter 2:24). In placing our sin on Christ, God ensured that all who will believe in the name of Jesus will be forgiven (Acts 10:43).

Jesus' resurrection conquered death and offers us an eternal future
Through His powerful resurrection, Jesus conquered death and offers us an eternal future, free from the condemnation that awaits sinful human beings. Because He rose from the dead, we too can look forward to resurrection if we believe in Him and choose to follow Him. We will still die physically as a consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve, but Jesus has changed the significance of our physical death: we shall rise into eternal life with Him and escape what the Bible calls the "second death" - an eternity without God and His light, an eternity of destruction. Because Jesus took the full brunt of death on our behalf, we can be spared its most terrible consequence.

We have to really search our hearts and face our guilt
Some people may laugh this off as a fairy tale or dismiss it as a utopian dream. But if they were to really search their hearts and face their guilt - which their hearts would reveal to them after sincere reflection - as well as their anxiety about death and what happens afterwards, then they may have grounds to reconsider their hasty dismissal of the gospel.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

It is man dangerous illusion to think that he can thrive on his intelligence and abilities
Many of us believe that we own what we have been given, but it is a dangerous illusion that brings with it all kinds of mistaken thoughts and unholy passions. A man who believes he owns all he possesses may think that he can live independently of God, that he is a self-made man, and that he can thrive on his intelligence and abilities. But the Bible calls this a false confidence and noted that "life does not consists in an abundance of possessions" (Luke 12:15).

Jesus told a parable about such a man (ancient ruler Nebuchadnezzar) in Luke 12:16-20
The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, "What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops." Then he said, "This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I'll say to myself, 'You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.'" But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?"

Jesus then concluded: "This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God" (Luke12:21). The man who appeared to be rich in worldly terms was in fact a poor beggar, with a shrivelled soul and a bleak future.
Pride of Nebuchadnezzar that caused his insanity and an animal-like existence
The ancient ruler Nebuchadnezzar had a personal experience of this truth. Daniel 4:28-33 recounts how the Babylonian king was filled with pride and a sense of self-sufficiency as he admired his city from the roof of his palace. At the time, Babylon was a great power, and Nebuchadnezzar began to believe that it was the creation of his own hands. This pride in his own achievements led him to believe that he possessed everything. "Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?" he said to himself (Daniel 4:30).

Well-known writer and Christian apologist C.S Lewis points out the seriousness of the sin of pride. "According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride," he writes in his book, Mere Christianity. "Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind." Only God is the true Creator and Owner of everything
How telling! Today, we are surrounded by things we have made, and these feed the illusion that we own everything we have. We enter our homes, for instance, and claim credit for all our possessions. As a result, we become like Nebuchadnezzar. What we need is a good dose of heavenly perspective. When we look up at the skies and see the universe, we are reminded that God made and owns everything. This truth challenges our illusions of being creator and owners. Only God is the true Creator and Owner of everything.

Jesus is the Heir of all things and owns everything
Jesus has been given all authority and power (Matthew 28:18). He can delegate it to us (Luke 9:1), but we don't own it. People who think otherwise can end up becoming tyrants and abusing what has been given to them, but they forget that He who gives can also take away. We do not own anything on earth. As Job declared, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart" (Job 1:21). So let us drop the soul-eroding illusion that we can live independently of God and that we are creators and owners - for it will cause us to miss Jesus' invitation.

"Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you" (Luke 10:19).

We need to listen to Jesus' call, for it comes from the One who is the Heir of all things and who owns everything.
Which of the four truths (that He is our Creator, our Physician, our Saviour, and the Heir of all things) appeals to you most? Why?
Jesus is our Saviour appeals to me most.
We have sinned and are cut off from God's heaven. None of our efforts is enough to remove the curses of the sins. Only a blameless being who is also human like us can help pay for our sins. Jesus, the Son of God became human on earth to suffer and die for us so that we can be saved. He was willing to sacrifice Himself for our salvation because of His love and grace for us. Without Him as our Saviour, we can never enter into heaven and live in eternity with God.

Jesus, the Son of God became human on earth to suffer and die for us so that we can be saved. He was willing to sacrifice Himself for our salvation because of His love and grace for us. Without Him as our Saviour, we can never enter into heaven and live in eternity with God.

Jesus came under the direction of His Father who also knows of our sins and the terrible suffering of sins. This shows the tremendous love they have for us, even as sinners. They also send the Holy Spirit to mold us to perfection despite our doom situation. They are even willing to erase our deadly sins with their grace and waving the holy law just to save us. We can therefore be reassured of their unfailing love and concern for us, before, now, future and eternity.
Jesus is our Creator, Physician, Heir, and is the most appealing Saviour for our sinning mankind.

Garden of Gethsemane was about the suffering of Christ. About the agony so intense that He trembled because of pain and bled from every pore. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." (John 3:16-17)

He is our Creator, our Physician, our Saviour and the Heir of all things. [1]

Like the woman, we need to deliberately reach out and touch Jesus. We need to respond intentionally, no one comes to Jesus carelessly. Only then will we find the true Healer and be healed.

Humbling and sobering experience of Nebuchadnezzar
At that point, a voice from heaven spoke words of judgement against the king, sentencing him to seven years of insanity and an animal-like existence: "Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes" (Daniel 4:32).

Well-known writer and Christian apologist C.S Lewis points out the seriousness of the sin of pride. "According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride," he writes in his book, Mere Christianity. "Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind." The deeply humbling and sobering experience caused the king to change his way of thinking, and he was restored: "At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honoured and glorified him who lives forever" (Daniel 4:34). The king realised how foolish it was to think that he alone had created and owned Babylon. It was only when he lifted his eyes to heaven and recognised his kingdom was a gift from God, that he regained his sanity.

Only God is the true Creator and Owner of everything

PHOTO: "Dear Lord, Thank you for sending Jesus to come to earth to suffer terribly and die in our place, and win for us true forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life. We pray for your protection, guidance, correction and provision, so that we can rejoice that our names are written in heaven. Thank you for your unfailing love and concern for us, before, now, future and eternity.
Please help us to search our hearts and face our guilt. The call 'Come to Me' has been issued from Jesus who knows exactly how we tick, what we need, and how we can be healed. Please help us to deliberately reach out and touch Jesus. We need to respond intentionally because no one comes to Jesus carelessly. We need to find the true Healer and be healed. Help us to listen to Jesus' call, for it comes from the One who is the Heir of all things and who owns everything. Through Lord Jesus Christ, our Creator, Physician, Saviour and the Heir to everything, we pray. Amen!"
