Dr Ng Chee Kwan, urologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre, sheds light on the quick facts you must know about urinary tract infections.
UTIs are caused by bacteria.
UTIs usually occur when bacteria enters the urinary tract and reaches the bladder. This is also why there's a common recommendation to "wipe from front to back" - you don't want to transfer bacteria from the anus to the urethra.

UTIs are more common in women than men.
Simply put, women get UTIs more easily because women have shorter urethras than men. This means that bacteria travels through a much shorter distance to reach the bladder.

Some women are more susceptible to UTIs than others.
While anyone can get a UTI, the condition tends to be more common among younger, sexually active women (as bacteria may enter the bladder during intercourse) and menopausal women.
In menopausal women, the lack of oestrogen leads to skin changes around the urethra, and can increase the risk of infection.

Failure to pee when you feel like it.
Failure to do so may increase your chances of getting UTI. On this note, it's also a good idea to pee after sexual intercourse. Holding your pee for too long means the accumulation of urine in the bladder can increase the risk of getting a urinary tract infection.

Failure to drink up enough water.
One basic rule to improve your urological health is to drink enough water. "The usual recommendation is to drink eight glasses of water a day, but this is not a hard and fast rule," says Dr Ng. Instead, he recommends letting your body be your guide, and to drink enough water to quench your thirst.

PHOTO: Increase your fluid intake. Both during a UTI and after, you need lots of fluids to flush out the infection and to keep you hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids can help to prevent cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder. It is often caused by infection and is usually accompanied by frequent painful urination).
Choose water, non-caffeinated tea, hot lemon water and other healthy drinks. Avoid caffeine, which could dehydrate you. Also, avoid sugary drinks and alcohol.

Cranberries are good for you.
Mum was right. Munching on these antioxidant-rich fruits do offer some benefits when it comes to preventing UTIs. "Cranberry may reduce the risk of UTI as it contains natural compounds that prevent harmful bacteria from attaching themselves to the lining of the urinary tract," says Dr Ng. He adds that taking cranberries in moderation is quite safe, but patients with recurrent urinary stones should avoid taking too much as they contain oxalate which can lead to stone formation. If in doubt, consult a doctor before eating cranberries regularly.

These antioxidant-rich fruits contain natural compounds that prevent harmful bacteria from attaching themselves to the lining of the urinary tract. Taking cranberries in moderation (howwhywhere.com recommended 50 to 150 milliliters per day of 100 percent pure cranberry juice) is quite safe, but patients with recurrent urinary stones should avoid taking too much as they contain oxalate which can lead to stone formation.
Cranberry juice won't work for men, and it won't treat an active UTI.

PHOTO: Usually, UTIs occur when bacteria find their way into the urinary tract via the urethra and start multiplying inside the bladder. The urinary tract is naturally designed to keep out microorganisms like bacteria but at times these natural defences can fail. Consequently, bacteria can stay and develop into a full-blown infection inside the urinary tract.
Bacteria can get into the urinary tract in several ways which include wiping from back to front after a bowel movement. Doing this can cause germs to enter into the urethra though the vagina.
Sexual intercourse can push bacteria in the vagina into the urethra. Bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract can leave the anus and enter the urethra, where they can move up all the way to the bladder and cause infection.
Other possible causes of UTIs may include holding urine in the bladder for too long, incomplete emptying of urine from the bladder, douching, use of a urinary catheter, or use of birth control devices like diaphragm. Blockages or abnormalities of the urinary tract, suppressed immune system, menopause, or recent urinary examination or surgery, are some of the risk factors associated with development of UTIs.

PHOTO: Routine cases are treated with oral antibiotics and are resolved in a week’s time. For cases that do not respond to initial treatment, higher end and injectible antibiotics are used. Urinary tract infections during pregnancy can turn an ordinary pregnancy into a high risk pregnancy. Since many medicines including antibiotics are not considered safe during pregnancy, such cases have to be dealt with swiftly and carefully.

PHOTO: UTIs do not always have obvious signs and symptoms. However, when symptoms occur, one is likely to experience a need to pass urine more often than normal but when they do only small amount comes out, pain or burning sensation when passing urine, pressure or pain in the lower abdomen, fever, feeling shaky or tired, or bloody, cloudy, dark, or smelly urine.
In women, UTI may cause pelvic pain. Depending on which part of urinary tract is infected, there may be more precise signs and symptoms.
It may not be easy to pin-point UTI in a child since signs can be unclear or he or she may not able to clearly communicate how they feel. Take a child to a doctor immediately you suspect they may have a UTI so that necessary tests can be done.

PHOTO: 50% of all women and 30% of the general population experience UTI in their lifetime. The incidence is higher in females as the urethra is shorter making it easier for microbes to travel upwards and cause an infection. Proximity to the urethra to the anus also increases risk of UTI in females. Incidence is highest in the elderly and hospitalized patients who are put on catheters.
