SINGAPORE - The maiden Singapore visit of Britain's Prince William and his wife, Catherine (Kate), took a bittersweet turn yesterday when they viewed an orchid named after Prince William's late mother.
Whisked to the Botanic Gardens immediately after touching down at Changi Airport's VIP complex just before 3pm yesterday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were shown the orchid named Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana.
They are on their first stop of a nine-day Asia-Pacific tour in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee this year.
The white orchid hybrid was named in memory of the Princess of Wales on Sept 2, 1997.
She was due to see the bloom but died in August that year in a car crash in Paris.
As the orchid was pointed out to him, the Duke reportedly said: "It's beautiful, it's beautiful. That's very nice."
The Duke and Duchess also viewed the Dendrobium Elizabeth II, named after the Queen during a 1972 visit.

The couple were also honoured with an orchid of their own, the Vanda William Catherine, a purple-and-white free-flowering orchid hybrid.
After their visit to the Botanic Gardens, the pair were welcomed by cheering fans at Raffles Hotel, where they will stay for the duration of their trip.
In a speech at the Istana last night, the Duke said that before leaving London, "my grandmother told me how warmly she remembers her three state visits".
He said: "She told me how much we would enjoy seeing Singapore and meeting Singaporeans...how right she was."

He was addressing over 30 dignitaries at a state dinner hosted by President Tony Tan Keng Yam. The Duke had earlier called on Dr Tan, as well as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
In his speech, Prince William also acknowledged Singapore's performance at the Olympics and the Paralympics.
Singapore won two bronzes in table tennis at the Games in London while, at the latter, equestrian ( the art of horse riding) rider Laurentia Tan won silver and bronze.
He said: "We are fortunate indeed...to see for ourselves the great Singapore success story. What you've done and become is admired around the world."
"The strong trade and investment links, the expanding scientific and educational ties, and our close defence cooperation all make this a particularly close friendship and partnership."

The Duchess, or Kate, as she is commonly known - and who has become a fashion icon in recent years - looked resplendent (attractive and impressive) in a purple-and-white knee-length frock reportedly designed by Singapore -born designer Prabal Gurung.
Both royals appeared in good spirits and chuckled during the Chinese dinner, when Dr Tan spoke of Singaporeans' love for English football.
Today, the royal couple will visit Gardens by the Bay and Strathmore Green, a Housing Board estate located in Queenstown, among other places.
They will leave for Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
