PHOTO: Fight in the spiritual battle
At the heart of this battle is an unseen spiritual warfare. This fight is against the three enemies of the soul - the flesh, the devil, and the world. The fight (Greek agōn, which has the same root as the word "agony") is not an easy one, but has that bruises and hurts. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12).
We must have the characteristics of a useful servant of God. As a faithful committed soldier, fight the good fight. As a disciplined athlete, finishing the race without losing and without being disqualified. And as a diligent farmer, ensuring a rich harvest both in our life and in God's field of ministry; keep the faith and prove ourselves as a holy instrument truly useful to God.
This spiritual war is not fought using weaponry, physical might and earthly power. The battle is fought through the cross of self-sacrificial love which challenged against the sinful ways of the world.

Reflect on Paul's three wonderful declarations (2 Timothy 4:7). How did he fight in the spiritual battle? How did he run? How did he keep the faith? Write down lessons for yourself and assess how your own spiritual life is going in the light of your reflections.
Reflect on Paul's three wonderful declarations (2 Timothy 4:7). How did he fight in the spiritual battle?
First Declaration: I Have Fought the Good Fight [1]
Paul often used the metaphor of battle and struggle to depict the Christian life. Here he refers to a wrestling match in the athletic games. In this battle, Paul wrote about the important of putting on the "full armour of God" so that "you can take your stand against the devil's schemes" (Ephesians 6:11). What he prescribed, he also practised.

Paul also knew from experience that this war was not fought according to the diabolical (devilish) terms of the devil or the shrewd tactics of the world. "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world" (2 Corinthians 10:3). Paul would have remembered what his Lord said when Peter drew his sword to cut off the high priest's servant's ear. After healing the man's ear, the Lord Jesus said to Peter: "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?" (John 18:11).

The world's methods of warfare include weaponry, physical might and earthly power. However, Jesus refused to be an earthly Messiah who would bring freedom through sword and spears; instead He was the Suffering Servant who gave His life on the cross as an atonement for sins - in obedience to His Father and for the salvation of mankind. The way He fought the battle through the cross of self-sacrificial love challenged the sinful ways of the world. It is for this reason that Jesus replied to Pilate when asked whether He was the king of the Jews: "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But my kingdom is from another place" (John 18:36).

As his Lord, so was Paul. he did not fight the spiritual battle with worldly weapons. He knew that his impending martyrdom would be the culmination (climax) of his battle for Christ. As a good soldier of Christ, Paul could say with a clear conscience that by the grace of God, he had fought well. He has been scarred in the battle, but he was a good and loyal soldier. Having been beaten and tortured for Christ, he carried in his body "the marks of Jesus" (Galatians 6:17). He was convinced that the real spiritual battle is fought not with the powerful weapons of the world, but with the self-giving love of God; not by taking up the sword but by taking up the cross; not with might but truth; not with worldly power but with divine love; not with a loud mouth but with a gentle spirit; not with worldly shrewdness but with godly simplicity. The next time we are tempted to employ the world's methods of warfare, we would do well to remember this.

In his letter to the Church of Antioch, Basil of Caesarea urged them: "Let us, therefore, not flinch from fighting the good fight on behalf of the truth, nor, in despair, fling away the labours we have already achieved. For the strength of the soul is not shown by one brave deed, nor yet by effort only for a short time; but He who tests our hearts wishes us to win crowns of righteousness after long and protracted (longer than expected) trail. Only let our spirit be kept unbroken, the firmness of our faith in Christ be maintained unshaken, and ere (before) long our Champion will appear; He will come and will not tarry. Expect tribulation after tribulation, hope upon hope; yet a little while." [3] Basil's exhortation echoes Paul's - both in its spirit and substance. Paul also lived up to that message on the way he fought a long, valiant (courageous) and faithful battle for the Lord and the gospel - not in his own strength but in God's strength.

How did he run (in the spiritual battle)?
Second Declaration: I Have Finished the Race [1]
In stating that he had finished his race, Paul moved to his second metaphor - a disciplined athlete who runs to win according to the rules. Paul was a determined and disciplined athlete as we have already noted. He prepared diligently for his ministry and travels. He made sure that he lived his life as a long distance race that required determination, faith and obedience. He had kept the rules prescribed by God and ran with a view of victory. He did not take a holiday from obeying Christ but pressed on relentlessly to "take hold of that which Christ Jesus took hold of [him]" and used his God-given energy fully to strain forward to the prize awaiting him (Philippians 3:12-14). In all this, he kept his eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).
PHOTO: Second Declaration: I Have Finished the Race
Paul was totally committed to the preaching of the gospel to the Jews and especially to the Gentiles - as Christ had commanded him. His hope was in Christ and he ran his race towards this hope.

Paul shared with the Ephesian elders in his farewell speech to them, that his top priority in life was to "finish the race and complete the task" that the Lord Jesus had given him (Acts 20:24). Paul, therefore, shook off anything that hindered his race and ran consistently - without giving up hope, even in the most difficult of circumstances (Hebrews 12:1). He had trained well.

Paul was totally committed to the preaching of the gospel to the Jews and especially to the Gentiles - as Christ had commanded him. His hope was in Christ and he ran his race towards this hope.

As he approached the tape at the end of the race, Paul felt the exhilaration of victory, thanks to God. He was gripped by the spirit expressed in these words: "In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). Paul felt the joy of faithfulness and "long obedience" to Christ. He had refused to compromise his message, motive, or methods, neither to cut corners nor take short-cuts in the race.

In one of his earliest epistles, Paul stated his abiding principles which guided his entire ministry throughout the long years of service (1 Thessalonians 2:2-6). He ensured that the gospel that he preached neither sprang from error nor was adjusted to accommodate strong opposition or popular expectations. Paul did not carry out his ministry out of impure motives - for wealth and applause. And he did not change his methods to suit base on desires and motives; he did not use flattery or trickery. Paul operated according to God-given principles that ensured that he completed the race faithfully and successfully. God has given him stamina through all the challenges along the way and he was about to gloriously finish his race.
PHOTO: Paul was confronted and opposed by the enemies of the gospel - men less spiritual than himself. There were times when he patiently explained to them the gospel message even when they were shouting to drown his voice. Yet he exercised great patience with them. It also reflected the hope that somehow one's opponents may eventually be saved.

How did he keep the faith (in the spiritual battle)?
Third Declaration: I Have Kept the Faith [1]
The first two statements of Paul are aligned to the first two metaphors to describe the faithful servant who is useful to the Lord. As a fully committed soldier loyal to his commander, Paul had fought the good fight. As a disciplined athlete who ran according to the rules, Paul had finished the race. Paul's third metaphor can also be applied to his third statement - a diligent and hardworking farmer will see a rich harvest. God has sown the seed of the gospel in his life; it was the faith that he had carefully guarded. And Paul had in turn sown the same seed in the lives of others, making disciples of Christ and planting churches. He had diligently sown the seed, and he knew that there will be a rich harvest in the days ahead. Like a hardworking farmer, he had diligently done his work and kept the trust of his Master. He had guarded the faith and passed it on.

Paul felt the elation of a runner who had not dropped the baton in a relay race and who had now passed it successfully to the next runner. He was delighted to have kept the faith as he had received it from the Lord and His other servants. Not only did Paul retain his personal faith in Jesus amid all kinds of challenges and disappointment, he had also kept the faith - as the body of truth we call the gospel. He had faithfully held on to the gospel faith that is connected with the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The British monarch has been, by tradition, known as the Defender of the Faith - with reference to the Church of England. It was reported that Prince Charles, next in line to the British throne, indicated that in view of the changing demographics of British society, it would be better for the British monarch to be known as the Defender of Faith rather than Defender of the Faith (a title used since Henry VIII). [4] There is a big difference between the two titles. One defines faith as a nebulous (vague) human sentiment irrespective of specific doctrines or traditions; the other holds the view that faith in order to be meaningful must be related to an objective body of doctrinal truth, rituals, and moral values. When Paul declared that he kept the faith, he referred to the specific gospel of Jesus that had been revealed, and the personal experience of placing one's trust in Jesus. Paul had kept both aspects of his faith.

A Useful Servant [2]
Paul had come to a point close to death and was able to review his life and ministry in the presence of his Lord. What he had considered to be the characteristics of a useful servant of God, Paul exemplified (illustrated) in his own life. As a faithful committed soldier, Paul had fought the good fight. As a disciplined athlete, Paul had finished the race without losing and without being disqualified. And as a diligent farmer, Paul had ensured a rich harvest both in his life and in God's field of ministry; he had kept the faith. Paul had proven himself as a holy instrument who was truly useful to God.

Now he awaited glory in the presence of Christ. The crown would be awarded to him by the righteous Judge as He welcomed His faithful servant home. Even in the damp and gloomy Roman prison, in the loneliness and lowliness of imprisonment, Paul's eyes were already beholding the not-to-distant glory on the horizon. The darkness of death and martyrdom would be replaced and overshadowed by the glory that awaited Paul and all who, like him, keep their eyes on Jesus and run the race well - faithful to their Lord to the end.

PHOTO: There is something more important than life, and that is eternal life. God defends the eternal life of all who, in true faith, stand for Him.
The story of Stephen in Acts 7 gives insight. When Stephen stood firm for Christ in the face of Jewish persecution in Jerusalem, he was stoned. But just before the stones began to fly, Stephen had a vision of Jesus in heaven standing at the right hand of God, waiting to receive Stephen’s spirit. Normally, Jesus is pictured seated at the right hand of God (Ephesians 1:20; Hebrews 8:1). But Jesus stood in honour of Stephen’s courage and commitment. It also says, “Then he (Stephen) knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, 'Lord do not charge them with this sin.' And when he had said this he fell asleep." Acts 7:60

PHOTO: The crown would be awarded to Paul by the righteous Judge as He welcomed His faithful servant home. The darkness of death and martyrdom would be replaced and overshadowed by the glory that awaited Paul and all who, like him, keep their eyes on Jesus and run the race well - faithful to their Lord to the end.

Review of my own spiritual life
As a soldier I am unable to say with a clear conscience that by the grace of God, I had fought well.
I am also convinced that the real spiritual battle is fought according to the following.

Review of my own spiritual life
As a soldier I am unable to say with a clear conscience that by the grace of God, I had fought well.
I am also convinced that the real spiritual battle is fought according to the following.
- Not with the powerful weapons of the world, but with the self-giving love of God
- Not by taking up the sword but by taking up the cross
- Not with might but truth
- Not with worldly power but with divine love
- Not with a loud mouth but with a gentle spirit
- Not with worldly shrewdness but with godly simplicity
- Not in our own strength but in God's strength

As an athlete but a weak one; not yet determined and disciplined. Have to learn to use God-given energy fully to strain forward to the prize awaiting and keeping our eyes on Jesus. Unable to shake off anything that hindered the race and ran consistently. Haven't gave up hope, still fighting as the goal is not yet reached.
It is worrying that the gospel that we preached may be adjusted to accommodate strong opposition or popular expectations unknowingly.
I am convinced of the following.

- Not to carry out ministry out of impure motives - for wealth and applause
- Not to change our methods to suit base on desires and motives
- Not to use flattery or trickery
- Not to compromise the message, motive, or methods
- Not to cut corners nor take short-cuts in the race
- Operated according to God-given principles that ensured completion of the race faithfully and successfully
- Make use of the God-stamina through all the challenges along the way
