DAZHOU, CHINA
AN OFFICIAL of the Dazhou Environment Protection Bureau in Sichuan province has blamed the smoking of bacon as one of the causes of the smog plaguing the city since the new year.
The claim has triggered mixed reactions online, as many locals regard the smoking of bacon as a traditional method of preserving pork for Chinese New Year.
On Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging platform, some netizens mocked the official's theory, saying Dazhou's air should then smell like bacon.
It is not the first time that officials have suggested controversial (arguable) explanations for the smog.
In October, environmental watchdogs in Beijing and Henan province blamed the smog on farmers burning straw, an agricultural practice with a long history.
