People near the area of totality of the Great American Eclipse were treated to an amazing sight on Monday, as the sky was engulfed in total darkness.

A total solar eclipse is cause when the sun, moon and earth line up in their orbits.

Moving across the Pacific Ocean at more than 2,400 mph, the dark inner heart of the moon's shadow -- the umbra -- will move ashore near Lincoln Beach, Ore., at 10:16 a.m. local time (1:16 p.m. EDT), and then sweep across 14 states and 20 national parks over the next hour and a half.
More than 200 million people live within a day's drive of the path of totality, potentially turning the Great American Eclipse into one of the most heavily viewed and shared events in recent memory. [4]

Although watching it from a distance was nice, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) still had the best seats in the house and recently shared its captured images of the astronomical phenomenon.

Tons of photos from the eclipse were shared on social media recently, but NASA's GOES-16 satellite captured several breathtaking images from space.

The gorgeous imagery was streamed by NASA live, using its specialised telescopes, the International Space Station, planes and high-altitude balloons.

Some of NASA's esteemed astronauts also shared their photos during the rare aerial spectacle.

Meanwhile, the US will not experience another solar eclipse until 2024, which makes the stunning images much more special.

Americans were awed by a total eclipse of the sun on August 21, 2017. It was the first eclipse to cross the U.S. from coast to coast in 99 years, with a "path of totality stretching from Oregon to South Carolina".
There won't be another solar eclipse visible in the U.S. until 2024. Meantime, get your eclipse fix with these stunning photos. [4]

Amateur and not-so-amateur photographers, astronomers, and other enthusiasts began to arrive long before sunrise Monday morning. The university, which played host to some 14,000 people at its Saluki Stadium according to officials, had a full day of events planned surrounding the event, including the launch of three weather balloons equipped with sensors and cameras.
