Abramovic placed on a table 72 objects that people were allowed to use (a sign informed them) in any way that they chose. Some of these were objects that could give pleasure, while others could be wielded to inflict pain, or to harm her. Among them were a rose, a feather, honey, a whip, olive oil, scissors, a scalpel, a gun and a single bullet.

For six hours the artist allowed the audience members to manipulate her body and actions. This tested how vulnerable and aggressive the human subject could be when hidden from social consequences. By the end of the performance, her body was stripped, attacked, and devalued into an image that Abramovic described as the "Madonna, mother, and whore".

Additionally, markings of aggression were apparent on the artist's body; there were cuts on her neck made by audience members, and her clothes were cut off of her body.

Her name is Marina Abramović. She's 66 years old. Shes from Serbia and based in NY. And shes a performance artist. Performance art is essentially any form of art that is done in the presence of a live audience - that's a broad definition, but performance art has taken on a broad role.

Marina Abramovic uses the famous Abramovic Method (used by Lady Gaga), in order to create and develop artists' own method and practice. And, of course, the audience will enjoy: as she has put it herself - instead of being a performer, this time she will be "a conductor", and the audience will take the physical and emotional journey.

She assigned herself a horrifically passive role, where she would stand, for six hours, in an open space, behind a table with carefully chosen objects laid upon it, and a sign explaining what she was doing, and that she would take full responsibility for what was to happen to her.

On the table, the objects she used consisted of things that could be used for pleasure, and objects that could be used for pain, as far as death: A rose. A feather. Grapes. Honey. A condom. A whip. A scalpel. A gun. And a single bullet.

Museum-goers responded somewhat timidly for the first few hours, writing on her, tickling her, moving her around. Then about 3 hours in, someone cut her clothes and things got steadily more aggressive.

People tore at her clothes. Pierced her skin with a roses stem. Cut her with a knife and drank her blood. They carried her around, half naked, laid her down on the table and stabbed the knife in between her legs, driving it into and through the tables surface.

This was a 6 hour performance. Laid out on a table were 72 objects the audience could manipulate in any way they wanted to upon her body. As time passed, the audience became more and more agressive and by the end she was injured and violated.

It got to the stage where somebody put the bullet into the gun, and held it at her head with a finger on the trigger. Another member of the audience brushed this person aside, and diffused the situation. Another person tried to have sex with her, until (assumedly he) he was deterred by someone else. The tension was thick, real.

Performance shows just what people are willing to do to others when there are no consequences.

Rhythm 0 (1974), artist Marina Abramovic allowed people to use any of 72 objects on her in any way that they chose for six hours. She stood totally passive and surrendered control of her body to the participators. At first people reacted with modesty and caution, but as time passed, people began to act more aggressively. The consistent allowance of trust juxtaposed the increasing degree of violence she received, as those intimate actions were not subject to her approval.

After the six hours had lapsed, after she had been caressed, pricked, cut, scalded, almost raped, and almost shot in the head, the gallery's supervisor came and said that the act was now over. She walked forward toward the audience, naked, with blood dripping from her skin, tears in her eyes.  Everyone ran away, to escape an actual confrontation. The visitors scattered, unwilling to face what they had done.

Her work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. She had tested the limits binding the performer and the audience to their furthest degree.

Marina Abramovic has pioneered performance as a visual art form. In Luminosity, 1997, the work being re-performed for 13 Rooms, a performer sits on a bicycle seat bathed in light high up on the wall. Both physically and mentally demanding, Abramovic explains: Its really a work about loneliness, about pain and about spiritual elevation. About luminosity and about the transcendental (spiritual realm)  quality of the human being in general.
