Jezebel was a villainess whose story was told in 1st and 2nd Kings, two books in the Hebrew and Christian Bible.
In the book of 1st and 2nd Kings she is the wife of the wicked King Ahab who was king of Israel. She is the archenemy of the prophet Elijah and has been known for several clashes with him.
She has many of God's prophets killed and tried to kill Elijah when he slew her prophets of Baal.
She also indirectly murders Naboth , a man who owned a vine yard because her husband desired it. So she has him stoned. Elijah then tells Ahab that God will punish him and the Phoencian princess.
Jezebel was portrayed by Paulette Goddard on the 1953 film The Sins of Jezebel.

No woman in the Bible is more identified with wickedness and treachery than Jezebel, wife of King Ahab and persecutor of the prophets of God.

Her name, which means "chaste" or "where is the prince," became so associated with evil that even today women who are deceitful are called a "Jezebel." Her story is told in the books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings.

Jezebel was a Phoenician princess.
PHOTO: Jezebel was a Phoenician princess. She married King Ahab of the Northern Kingdom (ancient Israel). She helped convert Ahab from worship of the Jewish God to worship of the Phoenician god Baal. Because of that, in Christian lore, the name Jezebel is associated with false prophets, and further associated by the early 20th century with fallen or abandoned women (or prostitutes), and also with sexual promiscuity.

Earlier in Israel's history, King Solomon had entered many alliances with neighboring countries by marrying their princesses. Ahab did not learn from that mistake, which led Solomon into idolatry. Instead, Ahab married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal, king of Sidon, and she too took him down the path of Baal worship. Baal was the most popular Canaanite god (1 Kings 16:31).

Ahab built an altar and temple to Baal in Samaria, and a place of worship for the pagan goddess Asherah. Jezebel plotted to wipe out the prophets of Jehovah (1 Kings 18:4, 13), but God raised a mighty prophet to stand against her: Elijah the Tishbite.

The confrontation took place at Mount Carmel, where Elijah called down fire from heaven and slaughtered hundreds of Jezebel's prophets. She, in turn, threatened Elijah's life, causing him to flee (1 Kings 19:1-3).

Meanwhile, Ahab coveted a vineyard owned by an innocent man, Naboth. Jezebel used Ahab's signet ring to issue a royal order that Naboth be stoned for blasphemy. After the murder, Ahab prepared to take the vineyard, but Elijah stopped him. Ahab repented, and Elijah cursed Jezebel, saying she would be killed and dogs would eat her body, not leaving enough to bury (1 Kings 21:5-25).

The summer palace of Jezreel was the favorite retreat of King Ahab and Jezebel. Then the mountains of Gilboa were richly wooded, and sweet springs brought freshness to the air and luxurious beauty to the vegetation of Jezreel, even as they carried fertility into the great plain beneath, which in the summer light shimmered and trembled like a sea of golden corn. Such was the Jezreel of Ahab and Jezebel” the nearest, the safest, the sweetest summer- retreat from Samaria.
Manifestly it would be object of desire to acquire the land nearest to the palace, with the view of converting it into a garden. What such a garden might bear, and what sweet outlook on it could be enjoyed from the windows of the palace, may be judged from the lemon-groves still existing in the near neighborhood.

But Naboth, the owner of the coveted piece of land, could not be tempted to part with it by the king’s offer of either a better vineyard or an equivalent in money.
PHOTO: But Naboth, the owner of the coveted piece of land, could not be tempted to part with it by the king’s offer of either a better vineyard or an equivalent in money. It was the ancestral possession of the family of Naboth, and piety towards God combined with reverence for the memory of his fathers to forbid the unholy bargain.
So the king of Israel went to his house sullen and vexed, and came to Samaria (1 Kings 20:43).

Then came Jehu, a violent avenger for God, to destroy the wickedness in the land. When Jehu entered the city of Jezreel, Jezebel painted her face and eyes and mocked Jehu. He ordered some eunuchs to throw her out a window. She fell to her death, and Jehu's horses trampled over her. (2 Kings 9:7, 10, 22, 30, 37)

Accomplishments of Jezebel:
Jezebel's accomplishments were sinful, establishing Baal worship throughout Israel and turning people away from the God who had rescued them from slavery in Egypt.

Jezebel's Weaknesses:
Jezebel was selfish, deceitful, manipulative, and immoral. She refused to worship the True God of Israel, leading the entire country astray.

Life Lessons:
Only God is deserving of our worship, not the modern idols of materialism, wealth, power, or fame. Those who disobey God's commandments for their own greedy desires should expect horrible consequences. (Revelation 2:20)

Hometown:
Jezebel came from Sidon, a Phoenician seacoast city.

Referenced in the Bible:
1 Kings 16:31; 18:4, 13; 19:1-3; 21:5-25; 2 Kings 9:7, 10, 22, 30, 37; Revelation 2:20.

Dear Lord, we pray that we worship only You, the True God of Israel, not the modern idols of materialism, wealth, power, or fame. Please help us to obey Your commandments and not to commit sins to acheive greedy desires. Amen!
