Japanese residents in yukata, or summer kimonos, splashing water on the ground in the Ginza shopping district of Tokyo yesterday. Hundreds of yukata-clad people took part in the annual summer event to cool off amid high temperatures.

Summer has come. Japan has four seasons and enjoy the changing seasons.  In summer, it is very hot and humid.  Therefore Japanese has been devising ways of avoiding discomfort.

Japanese summer goods appeal to our sight, smell, hearing, touch and make us cool. Cool with Japanese traditional summer clothes, interior, wind bell sounds, or any other items present and discover the Japanese traditional wisdom.

This event in which office workers sprinkle water dressed in their yukata (traditional Japanese summer vestment) took place in Marunouchi, Tokyo. It was done as a part of the “Tokyo Uchimizu Project 2010” sponsored by the city’s Ministry of environment and other organizations.

People gathered at around sunset, and together they splashed water onto the surface of the street with a ladle.

The water used, about 600 liters worth, came from the savings for gardening and for disasters.

The Yukata is a casual light cotton kimono for wearing in summer. Yukatas normally have very brightly coloured designs on them. Japan is one of the few modern countries where the traditional dressing is still “trendy”.

Today japanese wear Yukata and go to the traditional Bon-Odori, summer festivals and fireworks shows. The relatively simple design of Yukata means Japanese women can, with some practice, put this kimono on unassisted.

During the Heian period (8 to 11th century), the nobles wore yukatabira (yu - bath and katabira - under clothing) after taking a bath. In time, the term shortened to yukata.

Later, the wariors also started to wear yukata, and during the Edo period, when the public baths become very popular, the yukata became widely worn by the public.

Ever since the first pedestrian paradise was held in 1970, events have been put on annually on the first Sunday in August. The types of events were revamped in 2007, and all of Ginza was given a summery appearance based on the theme of “Yukata de Gin-bura” (strolling through Ginza in a yukata).

1000 Person Cool Breeze Project in Ginza” involves a long line of people dressed in yukata splashing water on the street in unison.
