For the 30th year, Asakusa (a famous area in Tokyo) organized its Annual Samba Carnival. Japanese teams from all over the country gathered for a 5 hour-long parade in the streets surrounding the Sensoji temple. Then started a display of exuberant colorful costumes and feathers.

Although about 3 hours before the beginning of the event, the streets were already crowded with people preparing their cameras and video-recorders on tripods!! In a way, such a crowd was a good thing since it forced such mobility during the whole afternoon and get more photographs than probably would have gotten if sat down with everyone.

After living in Tokyo for long and hearing about this spectacular parade each year, this year I was there. True to the japanese tradition, this event was also packed with spectators much before I left. I squeezed through and did manage to capture some shots. First couple of hours were nice and sunny giving me some nice pictures, but it rained badly for last hour and half.

Japanese Samba Carnival in Tokyo 2009

The summer ended in Tokyo with its usual steaminess of humidity and sexy samba. Summer’s not over till Sept 21st but many Japanese view the end of August as the end of summer as most school kids in the States do as well. Anyway, in the Asakusa district of Tokyo they held their annual samba carnival with their usual array of scantily-clad girls sambaing away to the delight and lust of photographers.
